Where to begin…

I lived most of my life thinking I'd be a football player, and the rest of it not sure about my future. As much as I love football, I've preferred the latter.

Two University stints, one college diploma, and a few years of being my own boss has landed me to where I am now, the Creative Director for BizView Media (bizview.com) here in Winnipeg.

I've thrived off of not knowing where I'm going to be, and what I'm going to be doing in the next 12-18 months.

In 2007, I got quite comfortable in my hometown of Fort Frances, Ontario. After completing an audio engineering diploma, I moved back home with ambitions to start my own record label/management company. To my surprise, a record label didn't take well in a market of 8000, despite my ability to convince a few local funding bodies to grant and loan me cash to start my venture.

As I was planning to build my music empire, a side project took over my life. It was a short film called The Show, centred around growing up as a teen in Fort Frances… a subject i knew very well.

After premiering the film, many soon began to think of me as some sort of video camera genius, despite the fact I didn't operate the camera for The Show. I quickly began to get requests to shoot local projects, which eventually landed me a contract with the Fort Frances Times with their web division. I was tasked with producing content for FortFrances.tv, an online community channel.

The Cumming's (the owners of the newspaper) believed in me, and their confidence in my abilities spread across town. The record label was in the rear view mirror, and I was now making a living as a video producer and media consultant in the Rainy River district.

LIfe was great. I was working hard, and also had plenty of time to enjoy myself and Fort Frances. There was a good group of us living there at the time all interested in film projects, which eventually led to producing a short drama titled A Good Indian.

Shortly after, Fort Frances became a late victim to the recession, and fortfrances.tv was no longer in the plans for The Fort Frances Times.

The devastating blow to my business turned into a great opportunity for my career. I began freelancing for more clients, and working on media and communication projects. I was lucky enough to work with Couchiching First Nation during their controversial Toll Booth Initiative, which was a privilege, an honour, and a lot of hard work! I also decided it was time to head back to school, and to expand my creative horizons.

In the fall of 2010, I enrolled at the University of Manitoba, and dabbled in Film, English, and Theatre. I intended to graduate, but while searching for summer jobs, a career opportunity caught my eye.

Long story short, I landed a job at BizView. I have a great job, and a great opportunity to collaborate with individuals who are creative and ambitious in taking a chunk out of the online marketing market.

Like my life, my job description is always changing. I'm looking forward to grow with this company, retire at 30 (half joking), and to continue on crazy life path I'm on.

Cheers,
Andrew
